Excessive heat watch issued, town opens cooling center

Jul 21, 2011

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for the region beginning Friday at noon and ending at 6p.m. the same day. Temperatures in Wareham are expected to spike above 90 degrees on Friday and Saturday. The heat index is projected to climb as high as 110 degrees Friday.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity can become dangerous. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is advising people to remain cautious of the heat and has provided the following tips to keep cool and safe:

  • Avoid strenuous activity.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing; protect your face with a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty, to stay hydrated.
  • Limit intake of alcoholic beverages, which can dehydrate your body.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible, avoid too much sunshine, and use sunscreen with a high SPF rating.
  • If you do not have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun.
  • Cover windows that receive morning or afternoon sun.

The town has opened a cooling center for residents to beat the heat on weekdays from 8a.m. to 7p.m. at the Multi-service Center, located at 48 Marion Road. The center will provide air conditioning and entertainment. The center will not accept pets.

The center will be open Saturday if necessary. Log on to the town's website or call 508-291-3100 ext *1 to find out if it is open.
