Finance Committee closing in on override proposal
The Finance Committee is currently looking at a Proposition 2 1/2 override between $3.5 and $6 million.
"We know that $3.5 million isn't enough and 5 or $6 million is too much, so somewhere in between there is where we're looking at," said Finance Committee vice-chairman Marilyn Donahue. "We need to understand that is still involves significant cuts and changes."
Members of the Finance Committee met last Wednesday to discuss among other things the two budgets to be presented at Town Meeting.
One proposal will be a balanced budget with deep cuts to services, including the elimination of the Council on Aging and near elimination of the library. The other budget will still have deep cuts, but also include additional revenue in the form of a Proposition 2 1/2 override and a fiscal management plan.
Finance Committee Chairman Larry McDonald said both budgets should feature long-term details and show what it would do for the town five years down the road.
There will be a joint meeting of the Selectmen, Finance Committee and School Committee on Thursday, March 27 to discuss the budget proposals.
It's frustrating that it's taking so long to come up with this but on the other hand it's good that there's a lot of back and forth and figuring out of what really makes sense," Donahue said.
