Finding Zen

Sep 16, 2010

There's a new place in Wareham where you can achieve inner peace...as well as a full stomach.

Zen Restaurant in Wareham Crossing had a grand opening celebration Wednesday evening, firing up the hibachi grills, rolling up (or out) the sushi, and cutting the red ribbon.

"Our goal is that everybody who comes feels welcome here, and enjoys the experience," said Managing Partner Samuel Cheng.

And it is quite an experience. Cheng and President Kevin Shin describe the restaurant as Asian Fusion - incorporating traditional Japanese, Chinese, and Thai dishes with a modern, upscale and more-theatrical twist.

If you sit at one of the six hibachi grills, be prepared for flaming olive oil, a hibachi twist on "steel drumming" (rhythmically drumming with knives and other grill utensils), and keep your mouth open to catch broccoli florets or squirts of sake.

The full bar has a long stripe of flourescent-lighted floor, a kind of discotheque catwalk.

Or perhaps you'd prefer to a more relaxing atmosphere at the sushi bar, where fresh fish is delivered daily and rolled into various delicacies (try the spicy tuna appetizer, Cheng recommended) before your eyes.

Wareham Crossing workers already seem to appreciate the convenience - and perhaps regret the calories - of the all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet everyday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

And while the experience may be new and a little out-of-the-ordinary to Wareham, the owners are demonstrating that they want to become a part of the community.  They awarded $500 to the Boys and Girls Club of Wareham and offer discounts for mall employees.

"It's all a great thing for our community," said Selectmen Chair Jane Donahue at the opening ceremony.
