Firetruck fundraiser for the Onset-Wareham fireworks

May 24, 2011

Visit Walmart on Cranberry Highway in East Wareham on June 4 to check out a 1932 Maxim Pumper firetruck and help fill a pair of fire boots with donations for the annual Onset-Wareham Fireworks display.

The annual fireworks display is funded through donations from individuals, businesses, and community organizations. The Onset Bay Association, Wareham Village Association, and Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce raise the funds and need roughly $8,000 more for this year's display, which is scheduled for July 2 with a July 9 rain date.

“We really need the public's help,” said Onset Bay Association board member Mary Lou Payton. “We're not getting the sponsorships or donations that we have in the past,” she added, noting that the downed economy may be having an effect on donations.

The firetruck is owned by Wareham firefighter Howard Smith, husband of Town Moderator Claire Smith, who is on the fireworks committee helping to raise funds for the display.

A fundraiser will also be held at Mezza Luna Restaurant, located at 253 Main Street in Buzzards Bay, on June 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event will feature complimentary hors d'oeuvres, a 50/50 raffles, and an auction. A donation of $10 is suggested.

If you would like to donate to the fireworks display via mail, checks can be made out to “Town of Wareham Fireworks Fund” and mailed to P.O. Box 799, Onset, MA 02558.
