Fireworks, fun on tap for a festive Fourth
From dusk to dawn, the Fourth of July in Wareham will be positively packed with patriotic events and activities.
Getting things started at 10 a.m. on Saturday will be the Blessing of the Fleet at Onset Pier.
“We’re the only ones in buzzards bay that put on an event like this,” said Jamie McIntosh, assistant harbormaster.
This year is the second year the Blessing of the Fleet will take place in Onset, after it had been on hiatus since the 1990s.
“Now that it’s back, we are hoping to spread word a little more,” McIntosh said.
McIntosh expects about 20 vessels to take part in the boat parade. He said many of the vessels will be decorated in a patriotic theme for the Fourth of July, but some may choose another route, such as dressing up like a pirate ship.
He said the event officially starts at 10 a.m. and the vessels begin to pass through at 11 a.m. There will be a performance by the Falmouth Fiddlers before the boats come through, at about 10:30 a.m.
McIntosh said there were 200 people watching the event from the pier last year and he hopes the event will continue to get bigger.
“I just like seeing all the families together, being able to enjoy an event like this,” he said.
On the other side of town, starting at 8 a.m. will be the 39th annual Antiques Faire hosted by the Wareham Historical Society. The Antiques Faire will take place on the Village Green on Main Street from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Frank McNamee will be giving appraisals. The cost is one item for $5, three items for $10.
The $3 admission fee includes a tour of both the Fearing Tavern Museum. The Wareham Minutemen and Militia will muster at noon. Crafts, lunch and baked goods will be available in the First Congregational Church Fellowship Hall on Gibbs Avenue.
Going back to Onset in the afternoon, there will be a “Bicycle Pet Doll Carriage Parade” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Onset Village. Children are encouraged to decorate their bicycle, pet or doll carriage and take a patriotic parade through town. The free event will start at the Onset bandshell and is sponsored by the Onset Bay Association.
The biggest event of the Independence Day celebration will, of course, be the Onset/Wareham Fireworks, set to start at 8:30 p.m.
More than 30,000 people are expected to come to town and watch the fireworks display, according to Jackie Lindsay, head of the Wareham-Onset Fireworks Committee.
“You figure if we can bring 30,000 people to the town, we are generating revenue for the town and we are generating business to the businesses,” Lindsey said.
Like all big events, this one comes with a big cleanup. And after an arrangement with the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department fell through, Lindsey is looking for volunteers to help with the cleanup effort after the fireworks.
“I’ve been working nonstop, trying to get the volunteers to come out,” she said.
There will be a cleanup crew meeting on the Onset Pier at 9 a.m. on July 5. Anyone looking for more information can contact Lindsey at jackielindsey@comcast.net.
Regardless of the cleanup, Lindsey said she is excited to be in Onset to not only see the fireworks, but to see all the people and families who get to enjoy the experience as well.
“Every year, that is my goal -- to have a little kid hug me from the knees,” Lindsey said. “That’s what this is all about.”
