First responders rescue elderly man “swimming” at Bourne line

Oct 21, 2020

On Tuesday afternoon, first responders received a call about an elderly man who got out of a car at the Cohasset Narrows Bridge between Wareham and Buzzards Bay and jumped off the bridge into the water.

At the time, the Department of Natural Resources was participating in an oil spill response training in Onset Bay with the Massachusetts Environmental Police, Bourne Harbor Patrol, and Bourne Fire Department.

They quickly responded to the area, and found the man floating on his back near the railroad bridge, conscious and alert.

The man was pulled aboard the Department of Natural Resource’s Marine Unit 1, and transported to the Taylor Point Marina Fuel Deck where Bourne’s Emergency Medical Services were waiting to evaluate him.

When Wareham’s officers asked the man what he was doing, he told them that he “just wanted to go for a swim.”
