A man was transported to Tobey Hospital after nearly drowning on Onset Beach on July 23.

The man, who has not been identified, was removed from the water by three women he was with at approximately 6 p.m. near the Onset Bath House.

Wareham Harbormaster personnel administered first aid until Onset Fire arrived on the scene with two rescue vehicles, said Onset Fire Lt. Gene Crocker.

According to Crocker, the man was learning how to swim when he became submerged for an unknown amount of time. When Onset Fire arrived, Crocker said the victim was face down on the sand and breathing, but likely had water in his lungs.

“He was conscious, but he did go under and we administered oxygen,” said Crocker.

A car accident on Cranberry Highway called Onset Fire away from the scene. Crocker said Wareham EMS Director David Evans stayed with the victim until he was transported to Tobey Hospital for treatment by ambulance.
