Flags ceremoniously retired at high school

Aug 15, 2023
A ceremonial retirement to properly dispose of American flags was held at the high school on Wednesday, August 9 at 10 a.m.

The retirement ceremony was conducted by the Wareham JROTC and the Wareham High School Summer School Program. The summer school program sponsors the ceremony each year for members of the community to dispose of their flags.

Students assisted with the ceremonial burning of the worn flags and the group discussed the United States Flag Code. The flag code stipulates, “When a U.S. flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

During the ceremony, Cadet Aaron Legg, a summer school student and JROTC Cadet, lead the students in the pledge of allegiance.
