After entertaining movie-goers for roughly two decades, Wareham Flagship Cinemas have closed as of Jan. 3, but the company’s CEO said that he is looking into relaunching the theater elsewhere in town. 

The West Wareham theater’s property, located at 39 Doty St., has been sold to Eversource, according to representatives from both companies. The utility company will use the property as a staging area for power restoration in the aftermath of storms.

“The Wareham cinemas’ adjacency to our existing area work center allows for quicker storm response, improved operations in the South Shore and opportunities to support future needs,” said William Hinkle, a spokesperson for Eversource. 

The company already owns a property up the street from the theater at the intersection of Doty St. and North Carver Rd. 

As for Flagship, the company’s CEO said that this isn’t the end for Wareham movie-lovers.

“We are extremely grateful to the community of Wareham for their overwhelming support over the years,” said John Crowley, CEO of Flagship Premium Cinemas. “The sale of the property simply represents the end of a chapter.”

According to a press release from the company, officials are looking for a replacement location.

“We are extremely excited about the prospects of relaunching Flagship Premium Cinemas in the Wareham market,” Crowley said. “Our team at Flagship has been developing a new state-of-the-art concept which we are thrilled to bring to the Wareham community.”

Crowley emphasized the theater chain’s investment in the Wareham area.

“We absolutely love the Wareham community and market and look forward to a repeat performance,” Crowley said.

The Flagship Cinema location first opened in Wareham in the early 2000s, and underwent significant renovations in 2017, adding reclining chairs, a bar and more food options.
