Flipping out: Kaleidoscope performs at TD Garden
Performing in front of parents and competitors is one thing, but performing on the court at a Celtics game is a whole different ball game.
The Kaleidoscope dance and gymnastics teams tumbled and twirled across the floor of the TD Bank North Garden Friday, Jan. 11, during half-time at the Celtics game.
While performing on such a large stage is something the dance team is used to, having performed at the Garden four times, this is the first time tumbling was worked into the routine and the gymnastics team was brought on board.
“The dance team started doing it and this year we invited the gymnastics team … just representing Kaleidoscope as a whole,” said Kaleidoscope Director Michele Femino.
Femino choreographed the routine, which is a jazzy number called “Hot Has Gotcha.”
Femino said it was an exciting experience for the teams: “Who gets to go on the court?”
The crowd at the Garden was much larger than what the teams are used to.
“It’s thrilling being there,” said 18-year-old dancer Katie McCarthy of Wareham, who has performed at the Garden four times before. “I’ve been nervous every time, but once you get out there, it’s not bad.”
She said that the teams have put a lot of hard work into the routine.
“It took a couple months to put it together," McCarthy noted.
Kate Erickson, 10, of Marion, who is on the gymnastics team, performed at the Garden for the first time this year. “
It’s really cool that she [Femino] incorporated gymnastics” into the routine, said Erickson. “Since we’re gymnasts we’re used to having a spring floor, now we’re doing back-handsprings on the wooden floor.”
For their next big performance, the teams will perform at a Providence Bruins game.
