Fontes honored at his final School Committee meeting
Kenneth Fontes, attending his last School Committee meeting as a member, received a plaque from the committee on Wednesday, honoring him for his dedication and contributions to Wareham schools.
“I was completely devastated that he didn’t decide to run again,” said Chairman Rhonda Veugen of Fontes' decision not to seek re-election in the April 1 Town Election. Fontes has served as a committee member for two terms, beginning in 2008.
“I first got to know Ken when he was a 14-year-old freshman,” said vice chairman and former teacher Clifford Sylvia. “Even then he was a special young man. I can honestly say that not only was he my student, he was my colleague, but more importantly, he was my friend.”
Fellow School Committee member Geoffrey Swett chimed in: “The committee works because of people like Ken Fontes. If you don’t have the knowledge of the community and the passion to make it as good as it can be … You can’t contribute the way Ken Fontes did.”
Veugen then presented Fontes with a plaque in appreciation of his service.
“Thank you for all the kind words, and it’s been an honor to be on the committee,” said Fontes. “It’s bittersweet in leaving, but I couldn’t have worked with better people.”
