Former Wareham basketball star jailed on assault charges
Jules Tavares, who helped the Wareham High School varsity boys basketball team bring home the school's first ever state championship title last year, was arrested Sunday after he allegedly threatened a man with a gun at a party in West Wareham.
Tavares, 18, was attending the Blackmore Pond Road party during the early-morning hours on Sunday, when witnesses said he and a group of males left the area of the gathering and began taking items, including a laptop, Nintendo Wii, and an iPhone, according to court documents.
A fight broke out in the front yard of the home after the group was confronted about the alleged theft, during which Tavares allegedly informed one of the party's guests that he had a firearm, said "wait [until] you see what I'm packing," left the yard, and returned with a gun, which he "waved around in an aggressive manner" in the face of the victim, according to court documents.
The occupants of the home did not report the incident until roughly 6 p.m. Sunday, claiming that "they did not want any trouble with the males, they only wanted the stolen items returned," according to the police report. The victim allegedly threatened by Tavares also filed a police report that evening.
Tavares reportedly voluntarily visited the Wareham Police Station on Sunday to speak about the incident, and indicated that he'd been at the party with friends and that they were accused of stealing items, but said he had no knowledge about the missing items, according to the police report. He also admitted that there was a fight, but said he did not take part in it.
Tavares is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, and is held in lieu of $2,500 cash bail, due to a violation of probation for a previous charge of malicious destruction of property. That case would have been dismissed on February 14 had Tavares not violated probation.
Tavares led the Wareham varsity boys with 25 points in the championship game against New Leadership Charter School of Springfield last March. The team won 80-57.
Tavares left Wareham schools at the beginning of the current school year to attend private school Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Wilbraham. He reportedly left that school after a short time, and is currently a senior at New Bedford High School. He continued to score big points on the school's varsity basketball team, but has reportedly been dismissed from the team.
Tavares will return to court on March 3 for a pretrial hearing.
