Four Gatemen headed to Cape Cod All-Star game

Jul 22, 2014

While the Gatemen currently fighting for the final playoff spot in the Cape Cod Baseball League, they will be sending four players to the CCBL All-Star game in Bourne on Sunday afternoon.

Battery mates Kyle Cody (Pitcher) and Chris Chinea (Catcher) will be starters on the West Division All-Star team.

Cody, a junior at Kentucky, has started six games for the Gatemen and Farris said nearly all of them have been quality starts.

"He always gives us a chance," Farris said.

Cody's 2.58 earned run average and 1.15 walks and hits per inning put him in the top tier of Cape Cod League starting pitchers.

He also has 28 strikeouts in 31 and 1/3 innings pitched, which is easy to understand after hearing Farris say he has a fastball that reaches 94 to 97 mph.

"Kyle is a big kid with a big arm," Farris said.

Chris Chinea is in his second year with the Gatemen and leads the team in both batting average (.329) and runs batted in (17). The LSU junior also has 12 assists in 13 games behind the plate.

"Chris is more disciplined this year than last year," said Farris. "He's figuring a lot of stuff out this summer."

The Gatemen will also be sending utility infielder Keaton Aldridge and relief pitcher Scott Effross as reserves on the 25-man All-Star roster.

"Scott has done well for us. He's pitched well every time we can get to him," Farris said.

Effross has a 1.45 ERA in 24 and 2/3 innings pitched. He also has three of the team's seven saves.

Farris said Aldrige has done a little bit of everything for the Gatemen, playing catcher, pitcher and designated hitter all while maintaining a .311 batting average.

While not on the All-Star roster, Kyri Washington will also represent the Gatemen at the All-Star game in the four-man Home Run Hitting Contest.

"He's got the best power form anybody I've had in awhile," Farris said of the Longwood University junior.

Fans can catch these players and the rest of the best of the Cape Cod League at the All-Star game on Sunday, July 27 at Doran Park in Bourne. Gates open at 2 p.m. and the game is set to start at 6:05 p.m.
