Free lunch, breakfast still on the menu for Wareham students

Despite the saying, there is such as a thing as a free lunch, at least for Wareham Public School students.

Food Services Director Robert Shaheen informed the School Committee on Wednesday night that the district qualified for the Community Eligibility Provision again.

Created by federal legislation in 2010, the provision allows the district to provide free breakfast and lunch to students in all grades for the next four years.

Shaheen said he had plans to expand the menu for students in the coming years. Reducing waste and providing healthful options are his goal, he said.

“We are actively soliciting feedback,” said Shaheen. “We don’t want to serve things just because the government says we need to serve them.”

While students are afforded one free breakfast and lunch, those who want a second meal will have to pay.

The committee unanimously approved raising the price of a second lunch from $2.70 to $2.80. The cost of a second breakfast remains the same at $1.50.

Shaheen said the increase was required to remain within federal guidelines.
