Free rootkill available from sewer department

Aug 16, 2021

Those concerned about tree roots impacting their sewer line should stop by the Water Pollution Control Center for free root kill.

Sewer Department Director Guy Campinha explained at the Aug. 12 Sewer Commission meeting that if a root causes a problem at the connection to the main sewer line or at the section of the line heading to a home, repairs must be paid for by the homeowner.

To prevent such problems, Campinha recommends homeowners use rootkill once a year. Rootkill is a foaming herbicide that is flushed down the toilet and works to dissolve roots pushing through the pipes. Dissolving roots while they are small can prevent costly repairs.

Rootkill is available for free at the Water Pollution Control Facility Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
