Fundraiser launched to bring back Onset fireworks

The skies were dark over Onset this Fourth of July, but the Onset Bay Association hopes that won’t be the case next year.

The annual fireworks display, which draws crowds from all over Buzzards Bay, was cancelled due to a funding shortfall.

In response, organizers are collecting donations online and plan to hold fundraisers throughout the year.

“We have a really dedicated and passionate group of people that want to bring the fireworks back,” said Kat Jones, president of the Onset Bay Association. “They’re people from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life. We’re feeling pretty good that we can make the fireworks happen.”

So far, the group has raised $2,226 with $500 coming in on Monday through the online donation hub, GoFundMe.

Jones said the group aims to raise $40,000. That will cover the cost of the fireworks display that she estimated to be $18,500. The rest of the money pays for police and harbormaster details, clean up and restroom facilities.

Jones said in the past the Community Events Committee of Wareham has donated $20,000 for the show. That didn't happen this year, and organizers unsuccessfully tried to make up the difference in the months leading up to Independence Day.

“That had a huge effect on us,” said Jones. “That was the big reason we couldn’t make the fireworks happen.”

Looking ahead, Jones said she’s optimistic next year’s show will go on.
