Fundraising efforts underway to bring 'Moving Wall' to Wareham
Volunteers and donors are needed to help bring a scaled down model of the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial to Wareham this coming August.
On Wednesday, the relatively new Friends of the Wareham Veterans Council hosted an informational session to spread the word about its fundraising efforts in the months leading up to "The Moving Wall's" arrival.
Between now and then, the group, which is a nonprofit that formed last year, must raise $49,000 to pay for the wall and its associated costs, such as security, lighting and portable restrooms to accommodate the thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of expected visitors.
The wall will be in town for five days starting Aug. 17. It will be located at the track next to Wareham Middle School.
A half size replica of the memorial located in Washington, D.C., "The Moving Wall" is made up of 74 aluminum panels and 253 feet long and contains the names of those who died due to the Vietnam War.
In addition to raising funds for the wall, the Friends made clear on Wednesday that the group will continue to support the efforts of the Wareham Veterans Council, a town board.
“We’re not going to be a one-and-done group,” said Ilene Klaver, a member of the Friends. “We’re here to support the Council.”
However, the group needs help.
To raise funds, the Friends will seek corporate sponsors, grants and host a series of fundraisers. The first is a spaghetti supper set for Feb. 18 at the Pier View Restaurant in Onset from 5 to 8 p.m. Cost is $10 per plate. Tickets are available at the door.
Future fundraisers include: a breakfast at Wareham’s Masonic Lodge set for March 19, a fashion show on April 9 in Salerno’s Function Hall and a yard sale on May 29 in front of Town Hall.
