Gateway Babe Ruth open house June 5
Parents and players from Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester ORR Little league and Wareham Little league are invited to Gateway Babe Ruth's open house for 12-year-olds on Sunday, June 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Washburn Park.
Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served for kids and parents. There will be information about the league and a question and answer session.
There will be information about summer camp, fall ball, the Gateway Regional league, winter workouts and boot camp for the kids who want extra practices.
The league has two divisions in it, one for players aged 12-15, and one for the older end of that age group who are more skilled. The goal of the league is to prepare players for high school baseball.
The Gateway Babe Ruth teams have started competing for playoff positions. In the varsity division the top four of seven will make the playoffs, and in the Babe Ruth division each charter will play within themselves until there is one team standing. The top team in each charter will then go on to the regional round where they will play one another.
Teams currently in contention are the Old Rochester Bulldogs, who sit undefeated at 10-0 thanks to offensive contributions from Ted Dunn and Jack Lebrun and the pitching efforts of Adam Mendes and Lebrun.
The Wareham Renegades are currently 8-1 and have six games left in the season. The Renegades success can be largely credited to pitchers Devin Benoit and Mikias Noyce, who have pitched 17 strikeouts in 16 innings and 22 strikeouts in 12 innings respectively, and Jared Westgate, who has a batting average of .533.
The three Gateway varsity teams, the Knuckleheads (9-1), Pirates (6-4) and Tigers (5-3) are the top three teams in the regional league. These three teams, along with the Sandwich Breakers and Vineyard Purple, will be competing for the southeastern regional title.
