Gateway Youth Hockey Pee Wee team wins conference championship
Two Gateway Hockey teams played in conference championship games this past weekend, with the Pee Wees coming out on top 5-2 versus Hanover. The Squirts fell to Lower Cape Black in a tight one by a score of 2-1.
Pee Wees championship game
The Gladiators were fired up before the game even started Saturday, and they hit the ice with a purpose. The defense, along with goalie Ryker King, made it nearly impossible for Hanover to score and the offense applied so much pressure that Hanover could not muster their typically strong presence.
Halfway through the first period, the Gladiators got on the board with a goal from Danny Flynn. Just a few minutes later, Jack Martins scored off of an assist by Chris Cogan and Luke Mello and Gateway ran with the momentum scoring two more times in the first period on a second goal from Flynn and one from Ben DeMoranville, with assists from Zach Barris and Jack Martins.
The first period ended with a score of 4-0, but Hanover would not go down without a fight, scoring two goals of their own in the third period.
Hanover pulled their goalie and applied even more pressure in the final minute of the game, but an empty netter by Ben DeMoranville (two goals) sealed the deal, ending the game with a 5-2 championship victory for Gateway.
Squirts championship game
The Gateway Gladiators Squirts had a nail-biter of a championship game against Lower Cape Black Sunday morning.
Gateway came out strong, but Lower Cape got on the board early off a Gateway turnover, leaving them with an uphill battle from the start.
Lower Cape scored again, making Gateway continually fight for the puck. It was back- and-forth hockey with some strong scoring chances for both teams.
Goalie Ryker King prevented another goal for Lower Cape Black with some strong stops, but despite the effort and hard teamwork, Gateway was unable to tie the game.
Gateway lost only its second game of the season in the defeat. The Squirts played a great season going 22-0-3 during the regular season and in the 2-2-0 playoffs.
Bantams
The Gateway Bantams will play for the Yankee Conference Bantam Championship on Saturday, April 4 at 4:20 p.m. in Pembroke after beating Hanover this past weekend.
