Gatmen fall 4-5 to Braves in first playoff game
The Wareham Gatemen lost to the Bourne Braves 4-5 in extra innings in the first playoff game of the Cape Cod Baseball League’s western division on Friday night at home.
The Gatmen had a 4-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning when a Braves double put runners at second and third base. Off a pitch from Gateman Jake Matthys, the Braves hit a pop fly that was caught for out number two, but the Braves runner at third scored after tagging up.
In the top of the ninth, the Gatemen were two outs away from clinching the win when the Braves got a runner on first with a grounder. Matthys then retired the next hitter, but another Braves hit advanced the runner to third.
With runners at first and third, Gateman Gavin Sheets fumbled with a ground ball hit towards first base allowing the Braves to tie the game.
In the top of the tenth, the Braves had runners at second and third when a pop fly advanced both. And then a ground ball hit up the middle allowed the Braves to take the lead.
The Gatemen were unable to launch a counter offensive in the tenth as Braves' pitching quickly retired three Gatemen batters in a row.
The Gatemen will play the second game of this three games series on Aug. 6 at Doran Park, located at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
