George F. Averill, 74, wastewater treatment plant operator, member of Knights of Columbus

George F. Averill, 74, of Wareham, died July 10 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Stinson) Averill. He has been a resident of Wareham for 41 years.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Earl & Agnes (Conrod) Averill. He received his associate’s degree from the University of Mass. in Amherst and his bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater State University.

Mr. Averill was sewage treatment plant operator for the Town of Rockland. He previously worked for the Town of Sunderland. Before his work as a treatment plant operator, Mr. Averill was a fifth-generation railroad employee.

Mr. Averill was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Damien Council in Mattapoisett.

He is survived by his wife; his son, Sean R. Averill of Wareham; his brother, Earl Averill of Torrance, CA; his brother and sister in-law, Timothy and Sara Stinson, and sister in-law Kathleen Conrod, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Averill.

His funeral was held Monday. Interment is in Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne.
