George A. Funnell, 81
It is with great sadness that the family of George A. Funnell announce his passing at age 81. He died at his dream home on the Weweantic River in Wareham.
He was the son of the late George E. and Louise (Tautenhan) Funnell. He was born in Ossining, NY, and lived in Methuen, Fitchburg and Lunenburg before moving to Wareham in 1995.
He was the loving husband of Mildred (Minardi) Funnell and they would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on November 29th.
George was a graduate of Fitchburg High School, Class of 1958 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1958 to 1962 on the USCGC Casco as Enginemen Petty Officer 3rd Class. He graduated from Northeast Refrigeration and Air Conditioning School in 1963 and was then employed by Sears as a service technician for 32 years. He was very talented and could fix most anything.
He was herring agent in Wareham for 10 years, volunteered for Community Resources Network, Coalition for Buzzards Bay, Church of the Good Shepherd Table & Pantry. George was also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Axillary - Flotilla 63 and was past Flotilla Commander and Vessel Examiner. He also served as a reserve police officer in Lunenburg for 22 years.
George was past patron of Lady Emma # 27 Order of the Eastern Star in Fitchburg, and current member of Sandwich chapter # 221. He was DeMolay officer in his youth and life member of the Charles W. Moore Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Fitchburg. He was also member of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction Scottish Rite and the Aleppo Shriners.
He always made time to help family, friends or anyone who might need a hand with just about anything, and always had the right tool for the project.
George also leaves his two sons, David G. and his wife Michelle, and Douglas R. and his wife Sonja; his grandchildren, Dylan, Brendan, Morgan and Steven Funnell, Alycia Stevens, Cassandra Maxwell, Brittany Zinin; his great grandchildren, Ryley Maxwell, Lexi and Mason Coates; and several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation will be followed by a funeral service at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on the Canal, 165 Main St., Buzzards Bay on Friday, Nov. 19, 2021 at 11:30 AM. Interment with military honors will follow in Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne.
George was a loving husband, son, father and friend; a quiet and gentle soul who will be missed by many.
