George J. Downs, 92
George J. Downs, 92, died Jan. 14 at his home in East Wareham, unexpectedly. He was the loving husband for more than 60 years of marriage to Sophie A. (Overko) Downs.
Born in Tewksbury, he was the son of the late Charles and Anastasia (Gloden) Downs. A longtime resident of Dedham, Mr. Downs moved to East Wareham 25 years ago.
Mr. Downs owned and operated Downs Market in Dedham for many years. He was also a World War II, U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, and served with the 100th Bomb Group known as “The Bloody Hundredth."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Charles Downs of East Wareham, and John Downs of Putnam, CT; his daughter, Patricia Crane of Cumberland, RI, his brother, Donald Downs of East Wareham; his granddaughter, Hope Brennan of Cumberland, RI, and his great-grandchildren, Thomas, William, and Andrew Brennan. He was predeceased by two brothers, Leo Downs and Edward Downs.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway, Wareham, from 9 to 10 a.m., with a funeral service beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne.
