George W. Gifford II, 91
George W Gifford II, age 91, of Port Charlotte, FL passed away peacefully, Monday January 26, 2026 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Dartmouth, MA and grew up in Rochester, MA. He attended Wareham schools and graduated in 1952. He also attended Wentworth Institute.
He was married for 51 years to Jean A (Tassinari) Gifford. They first resided in Bristol, CT where their first 3 of 6 children were born. They returned to West Wareham and remained there until Jean’s death in 2005.
He worked for many years for Walter E Rowley & Associates as a land surveyor and at the same time drove night truck for Gault Transportation. He later turned to driving truck full time. He spent 5 years driving cross country for Carl Subler Trucking out of Saco, ME. He returned to driving truck locally and joined HiWay Concrete, where he worked until his retirement. The owners, the Vicino Family, became lifelong friends and had many travel adventures together, especially to Maui, HI.
George was always very active. He loved speed boating and waterskiing at their cottage in White Island Pond. He was very competitive at racquetball, 5k road races, corn hole, horseshoes and even completed a Triathalon at Otis AFB. He was known for his love of golf the most. He was a member of Port Charlotte Country Club. He was club champion in 2005 and was most proud of his 2 holes in one. Here he made many Florida friends, including his partner, Mary Price.
He was a lifelong member of the Improved Order of Redmen, Cromesett Tribe # 56 in Wareham MA. He was past Sachem and Past Deputy. He had a lifelong of memories including their annual clambake, roast beef dinners, dinner dances and parades.
He was also a Life member of the Republican Party. And a member of Teamsters Local # 79, Tampa, FL. He also coached Wareham Little League.
Survivors include his children, Glen R Gifford (Lee) of Wareham, MA, Joanne M Stephenson (David) of Wareham, MA, Julie A Franklin (George) of West Wareham, MA, George W Gifford III (Mary) of Goffstown, NH, Greg A Gifford (Nicola) of Maui, HI.
He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 1 great,great grandchild.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 11, 2026 at Redmen Hall, 745 Main St., Wareham, MA. From 1:00pm – 5:00pm.
