Gilbert C. Strothers, 70

Gilbert C. Strothers, 70, of Wareham died Dec. 4 at Kindred Transitional Care – Forestview after a long battle with cancer. He was the husband of Beverly E. Via-Strothers.

He was born in Dorchester and lived in Wareham for most of his life.

Mr. Strothers graduated from St. John’s High School in Dorchester. He served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1965.

He was awarded certificates as Alarm State Examiner of Electricians and as Massachusetts Burglar and Fire Service Technician for his outstanding service. He enjoyed building and racing radio-controlled boats, model trains, ice skating, roller skating with nieces and dirt bike riding with his kids and grandchildren.

Mr. Strothers worked as a technician for Intercity Alarms in South Yarmouth for 30 years and on Nantucket for 20 years.

Survivors include his widow, Beverly E. (Hammond) Via-Strothers; a son, Raymond S. “Scot” Strothers of Naples, FL; 4 daughters, Dawn Strothers-Pina and her husband “Sonny” of Marion, Shalyn Gomes and her husband Paul of Leesburg, VA, Jamie Via and her husband Russell Norman of New Bedford and Chenoa Via and her husband Dan Kashner of Onset.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Sandra Strothers of Boston, Denise Macklin and her husband Richard of Chesapeake, VA, Michelle Brown of Los Angeles, CA, Linda Strothers of Boston, William “Sonny” Strothers of Boston, Willette Strothers of Boston, Judy Pointdexter and her husband Keith of Boston; 3 brothers-in-law, Stephen Bulgar and his wife Lucia of Acushnet, Brad Bulgar of Onset and John Bulgar of New Bedford; his mother, Hazel Stevens of Boston. his mother-in-law, Gladys Hurt of Wareham; 7 grandchildren, Aaron, Alix, Asia, Kyla, Sebastian, Kahlel and MacKenzie.

He was predeceased by his father, Colonel Stevens, his biological parents, Gilbert and Virginia Strothers and his siblings, Gwen, Richard, and Virginia Strothers, and Reginald Stevens.

His funeral will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham. Visiting hours are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
