Girl Scouts find 'sweet' way to earn merit badge

Wareham’s fourth grade Girl Scouts not only got to earn a badge, but got to play with colorful (and tasty) decorations on Jan. 30.

In order to get their Simple Meals badge, the group of seven got a mini lesson on how to decorate cupcakes from Cape Cod Cakes baker Julie Allen, who has been baking cakes since 1994.

Allen took the girls on a tour of the small bakery on Cranberry Highway, where she has been creating everything from simple muffins to elaborate cupcakes to tiered wedding cakes for the last several years. She said she likes the profession because “there is always a happy reason to make a cake.”

Allen also showed the girls examples of the cakes she makes, including a handbag-shaped one and another decked out with gold-colored frosting. She said she enjoys the process, even though it can be very difficult to make specifically shaped pastries that are outside the realm of the average cake.

“If they show me a picture of it, I can do it,” Allen said.

The cupcakes Allen helped the girls make were far less difficult to design. The girls chose light blue and purple as their frosting colors, and Allen showed them how she creates the colors with food coloring and plain white frosting.

Among the decorations she let the girls use were lustrous candies and pieces of fondant, which she showed them how to roll out like dough.

“Roll it in confectioners’ sugar, to help avoid sticking,” she said as the girls sprinkled the sweet white power on the glass table. “But not too much or it will dry out.”

By the end of the hour, both the girls and the table were covered in sugars of various sorts and pastel frosting. They resisted the temptation to eat their sweet creations, instead wrapping them up to show their parents.

“My mom is going to hate that I have this,” Girl Scout Mikayla Black said.
