Girls basketball team to raise funds for young cancer patient
The Wareham girls basketball team will once again team up with the Dick Melloni Youth foundation to raise funds for a young girl battling cancer.
Raffles, auctions and more will be held on Friday, Jan. 13 to raise money for the Alexander family. The event will be held during the junior varsity and varsity games at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Wareham High School.
All proceeds will go to the Alexander family to help them as 3-year-old Madelyn Alexander fights leukemia. The Dick Melloni Youth foundation has donated a check to cover the costs associated with this game, so the school will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the fundraiser.
Madelyn was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2016. She was admitted to Boston Children's Hospital and was there for a month before beginning outpatient treatment at the Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana Farber.
Madelyn will endure just over two years of treatment. She will turn 4 in February and has a sister named Camden. Her father Dan Alexander grew up in Wareham and is a graduate of the class of 2001. Madelyn's grandmother Jeninne Alexander currently works at Wareham High School.
