Girls tennis comes oh so close!

Apr 20, 2010

The girls tennis team had its best showing yet this year at Bourne on Thursday, April 15 with both sophomore Rachel Bonfiglio and junior Kayla Wyatt, at second and third singles, respectively, winning their matches.

Bonfiglio's match was close for two sets, but she pulled away with the win in the third to defeat Bourne's Alex Duxbury 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.

Wyatt handily defeated her opponent Kim Ohnemus 6-2, 6-3.

Unfortunately, Bourne pulled through with victories in both doubles matches and first singles, winning the overall match by a score of 3-2.

Nevertheless, Coach Geoff Swett was pleased with the result.  He said that the team was very young and new to the game.  There are only three returning varsity players, and they all have had to move up to play tougher opponents: Senior Allison Covel moved up from second doubles to first singles; Bonfiglio played third singles last year; and Wyatt played second doubles with Covel. But what's even more impressive is that  all of the returning varsity players only began playing tennis when they joined the team!

"The two individual victories [Thursday] against Bourne were the first as singles players for both Kayla and Rachel but will not be the last!," said Swett.  "They have all made tremendous progress as players and are representing Wareham well."
