Going down the rabbit hole with the Viking Theatre Company
Assistant Director Kiah Heron said the upcoming performance of “Alice in Wonderland” at Wareham High School will be different than the version most people are used to.
She calls this version “Alice with a twist.”
The play, which will be performed this weekend at Wareham High School Dec. 4-6, is based off a version created by the Manhattan Project, and shows the power struggle between all of the characters involved. Heron, a junior, said the six actors and actresses chosen will attempt to create an “in-vironment,” inciting audience involvement throughout.
“They’re all trying to pull the rug out from under Alice until she gets back home from Wonderland. There’s some surprises along the way. There are parts you’ll recognize, but ‘nothing is as it seems in Wonderland,’” she said, quoting the production.
The play will be directed by Carolyn Gomes-Vieira, and English teacher who is in her first year as director for the Viking Theatre Company, though Gomes said the students are at the core of the production.
“We wanted it to be student-driven,” said Gomes-Vieira.
Heron said said a group of those involved with the Viking Theatre Company met at Cosi in Wareham Crossing over the summer to come up with a master plan for the 2014-15 school year.
“We knew we wanted the musical and the fall show to be different—we collaborate on every idea,” said Heron, noting that the other performance will be the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. “It’s funny and light weight."
Heron said it’s been exciting to see how some of the cast and crew have risen to the occasion of preparing for the show.
“You see a different side of people in this environment,” said Heron. “People who love doing costumes love doing costumes. People who do set love doing set. Everyone’s so passionate about what they do.”
“I’m excited about it,” said Hannah Vary, an 11th grader who recently transferred to Wareham High School from Bristol Agricultural who will play the lead role of Alice. “The people who come will be able to come down the rabbit hole with us.”
Besides Vary, the rest of the cast includes Kaylee McManus, G. Allen Perry, Abby Wood, Mia Sarkisian, and Kimberly Barboza. Understudy Ashley Peterson has also helped out as an alternate cast member over the course of the year. Each of the characters besides Vary play several different characters.
Letitia Bottino, a 10th grader working as a set hand on the production, said she thinks they’re close to being ready for the performance.
“It’s going good,” she said. “It took a while, but it’s coming along.”
The performances will take place Dec. 4-6 at 7 p.m. each night. Pre-sale tickets are available, and season passes are also available for $35. The performances will take place inside the Wareham High School Auditorium.
