Governor vetoes $25,000 earmark for Wareham's Summer of Celebration
Governor Deval Patrick has nixed $25,000 in funding for next year's Summer of Celebration in Wareham.
The funding was earmarked in a $125 million supplemental 2013 budget the governor signed late last week.
The summer of 2014 marks the 275th anniversary of the incorporation of the town and the 200th anniversary of the British attack on Wareham by the HMS Nimrod warship.
A committee has formed to raise money for the events, which will include reenactments, parades, fireworks, and more. Organizers are aiming to raise $75,000 to $100,000.
State Senator Marc Pacheco (D-Taunton) submitted an amendment to the Senate's supplemental budget last month that earmarked $25,000 for the celebration, which organizers said would have been a big help to the effort.
The supplemental budget with the money for Wareham was approved by a joint legislative committee before making its way to the governor's desk.
Patrick disapproved the effort, along with other funding that he deemed "non-essential." He wrote to legislators that the funding earmarked for Wareham, as well as other funds for the Mass. International Festival of the Arts, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the New Bedford Ocean Explorium, the Frederick Douglas House in New Bedford, Arc of Greater Plymouth, and the Greater Plymouth Performing Arts Center, "exceeds what I believe is necessary."
Pacheco says he is disappointed by the governor's decision.
"I'm disappointed that [Patrick] vetoed it because these monies … incorporate our history, but also invest and leverage … dollars that stimulate the economy," the senator said. "This was a request that was made from the community. … A community that has been very supportive of the governor."
Pacheco said he and his colleagues plan to ask legislative leaders for an override of the vetoes, which would first need to be approved by the House.
"Any time I am associated with an initiative, I don't back down that easy," said Pacheco. "We'll try to do what we can to make sure that, ultimately, we get it passed."
