Grant gets housing at 801 Main closer to construction

Jun 25, 2024

Eight units of affordable housing at 801 Main Street have received additional support in the form of a grant from the state.

They will join 49 units already built at 815 Main Street, and will be constructed by the same builder, John Scanlan.

Scanlan said the new construction is “expanding” the work that has been done at the Village at 815 Main.

“I think people are happy living there,” he said. “We try to take care of the place.”

The project has already received approval from the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals.  Scanlan said he is targeting early 2025 for the start of construction.

The grant was announced on Thursday, June 20, by Governor Maura Healey. “These awards are one of the most effective tools our administration has to increase the development of housing that is affordable for people across the state,” Healey said.

The awards announced by the state total $227 million and support 1,874 rental units across Massachusetts. The state did not specify how much money 815 Main Street received.

Scanlan said he has not yet received an official notice of the award. Once he does, he will create a construction budget, then see if he needs any additional funding to turn plans into reality.

He did a draft construction budget six months ago, but “construction’s so crazy right now” he won’t want to use old figures for planning purposes.
