Group exploring Onset skate park

A group of skateboarders and their supporters are seeking to bring a skate park to Onset.

Onset Bay Association member Kat Jones is co-coordinating a committee to build support for the idea, and she hopes to ultimately help build a park.

“There’s a lot of skaters in Onset. I think they need a corner,” said Jones. “Right now, it’s just an idea.”

Jones noted that a park would cost about $100,000 and require town support and permits.

She knows there are skate parks at the Gleason Family YMCA and in Buzzards Bay, but said skaters have not been drawn to those skate parks.

“They don’t want to go to the park at Buzzards Bay. They don’t want to go to the park at the Y,” she said. “We need to give them their own little piece of the universe.”

Jones has invited kids to join the skate park committee, formed last fall, which consists of Jones, Kristen Coviello of Onset and about eight skaters, ranging in age from 16 to just under 30.

“I wasn’t looking to do this alone,” said Jones. “This idea was presented a few years ago, and no one really stepped up to the plate. I needed a committee.”

Among the skaters is professional skateboarder Anthony Shetler, who Jones said helped set up the Taunton skate park.

Jones has looked to the Tony Hawk Foundation for potential help. The foundation has $25,000 and $1,000 grants to help construct parks in low-income neighborhoods.

She is confident that with the support of the skaters themselves, the skate park project can grow beyond its present grassroots stage. She hopes that the community will see the skaters’ dedication to the project.

“There’s a lot of misconceptions about skaters,” said Jones.

She said that having enthusiastic, involved skaters will help re-energize whatever area the skate park is built.

“There’s a lot of rundown and unsafe areas in Onset,” said Jones.
