Harbormaster, police, fire departments rescue man from drowning

Wareham first responders rescued a person who fell into the water near Broad Cove on Monday afternoon.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., the Harbormaster Department received a report from Wareham Police that a person was in the water yelling for help.

After the rescue, the victim explained that a gust of wind moved his rowboat while he held the line secured to the vessel. The victim lost his footing and fell into the water.

Wareham Marine Unit 5 with a crew of two responded from Onset Pier as well as a mobile unit. Wareham police, Onset Fire Rescue and Wareham EMS were also dispatched. At the scene, the victim was spotted 50 yards off shore yelling for help.

First responders entered the water with lifejackets and swam out to the victim. Marine Unit 5 made it to the victim at the same time as the rescue personnel from the shore. The victim was brought aboard WHM marine unit 5 and transported to the shore to be checked out by Wareham EMS.

The victim was assessed and released without injury.
