Harvest Triathlon races through Wareham
The Harvest Triathlon returned for its second year at the A.D. Makepeace company on Saturday morning.
Athletes arrived early at the cranberry grower’s headquarters for the race, formerly known as Escape the Cape. The triathlon was previously held in Onset. It was moved two years ago due to safety and traffic concerns.
More than 500 athletes from all across New England came to Wareham ready to swim, bike and run. The event was organized by triathlon company Max Performance.
“Our athletes are here to test their endurance,” said Race Director Tim Richmond. “So we try to make sure they have a good time while they’re at it.”
This year, participants had their choice of two courses which brought them through Carver, Plymouth and back. The sprint course consisted of a third of a mile swim, a 13-mile bike ride and 3-mile run. The olympic course featured a .9-mile swim, a 29-mile bike ride and 6-mile run.
“The run course through the cranberry bogs was a little rough with the sand,” said Kristin Pitocco of Waltham. “But they’ve made some changes from last year, and it’s a lot better now.”
“I love the bike course,” said Malia Koppin of Waltham. “It’s a great way to shake out and get ready for the season.”
Participants also helped to raise money for the American Alzheimer's Association in conjunction with Max Performance.
“It’s not something we require our athletes to do,” Richmond said. “But a lot of them come through.”
