High winds close several major roads, knock out power in Wareham
High winds wrecked havoc in Wareham Friday evening as emergency crews responded to numerous reports of downed trees and electrical wires that closed major roads in town.
The storm brought near hurricane-force winds and prompted portions of Cranberry Highway in East and West Wareham to be closed. In West Wareham, a large tree brought down electrical wires near Walmart at approximately 6 p.m. Traffic lights were out at intersections from where Main Street meets Cranberry Highway to Walmart. Much of West Wareham was without electricity.
In East Wareham, crews respondened to downed trees that forced the closure of Cranberry Highway, Main Avenue and Indian Neck Road.
Emergency broadcasts reported incidents of property damage, too, with a car on Carver Road struck by a tree. Broadcasts also stated that several homes and mobile homes were damaged by fallen trees and limbs.
According to Eversource, 9,422 Wareham customers (64 percent of the town) were without electricity Friday evening.
