History, nature come together at Tweedy & Barnes property

Dec 30, 2016

Abundant, natural resources once helped powered Wareham’s economy, and conservation officials want to educate the public on that history.

Installed on Dec. 21 at the Wareham Land Trust’s Tweedy & Barnes property, six new signs touch on the site’s natural landscape and former commercial viability.

“That part of the Sippican River was once known for alewives and it attracted so many fishermen that the town had to regulate fishing at the site,” said Michaella Sheridan, a community engagement coordinator for the Buzzards Bay Coalition and the Wareham Land Trust.

That history is explained along with other tidbits about the area’s past on the signs. The Tweedy & Barnes preserve is a 25-acre plot of land located off of Blackmore Pond Road.

A parking spot is located a quarter of a mile from where Blackmore Pond Road meets County Road. The preserve is home to upland, bogs and wetlands in addition to walking trails with views of the river.
