Hit-and-run case continued to August 13

The case for Eric Thompson, a Wareham man charged in connection with an April 12 hit-and-run accident on Gibbs Avenue, has been continued until August 13.

The 37-year-old Thompson has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash after causing personal injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.

The crash left 70-year-old Wareham native Robert Mackenzie, who was delivering newspapers at the time, with severe injuries including a broken pelvis, shoulder, and hip, and with fractures in his back, and he also underwent plastic surgery for an injury to his face.

Thompson was arrested after Wareham Police executed a search warrant to his 11 Luna Avenue (Swifts Beach) home after someone saw a green Ford Ranger pick-up truck parked on the premises that showed damage consistent with the accident.

Mackenzie was treated at the scene by Wareham EMS personnel and transported first to Tobey Hospital, and was then airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital where he underwent treatment for his injuries. He is currently still undergoing rehabilitation.

Thompson reportedly stopped after hitting Mackenzie and told him he’d be back to help, but he never returned.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.
