On home court, Wareham Vikings open tourney with win
For the first time in over a decade, the Wareham Vikings boys basketball team is hosting a tournament. While on the subject of firsts, the team's first tournament game on Dec. 19 was also the first of the Vikings’ 2013-2014 season.
The inter-divisional tournament features Cardinal Spellman, Dennis-Yarmouth and Sandwich.
In their first game, the Vikings faced off against Dennis-Yarmouth. After a rough start, Wareham locked down on defense. Generating turnovers and rebounds, the Vikings created an efficient offensive push which led them to a win, 62-45.
For perspective on the second half turnaround, the score at halftime was 36-34 in favor of Dennis-Yarmouth.
The game's leading scorer was senior forward Latroy Hairston dropping, 16 points.
"I feel accomplhished. Last year, I didn't show up a lot, but this year -- my senior year, I'm going hard," Hairston said. "Double-double every game, that's how I have to do it for my team."
Hairston said he started slow, but there was a distintic moment in the second half when things turned around.
"There was a free throw I hit... and just the feeling of it going in... it just set it," Hairston said.
The tournament was set to conclude Friday night.
