Home delivery: EMS workers help deliver baby at home

Dec 13, 2013

Babies can be so impatient.

On November 22, Wareham EMS workers Cheryl Evans and Brian Donahoe responded to a call regarding a woman in labor.  Upon arriving at the home, the partners began prepping the expectant mother to be transported to the hospital.

It soon became apparent that they wouldn’t make it to the hospital.

“After we arrived, the police officers told us, 'It looks like we’re going to be delivering here,'” said Donahoe. “My partner turned around to get the special kit for these situations, and when she got back, the baby had been delivered.”

Evans has seen her share of home deliveries, but this was a first for Donahoe.

“She couldn’t make it to the hospital, so we delivered at home,” Evans said matter-of-factly. “I’ve done that, but it was my partner’s first delivery.”

Wareham EMS was unable to release the name of the couple due to privacy laws.

Donahoe, who has been a paramedic since 1998, said that the experience was “close to the highlight of my career.”

“I was very nervous, but confident in my training,” said Donahoe. “I wasn’t worried about my ability to do it, just if there were any complications.”

Thankfully, there were no complications — only a healthy baby!

“I knew she had to push, so she couldn’t go anywhere,” said Evans. “You can’t move her, you have to assist in the delivery and get everything squared away.”

Paramedics see any number of horrific scenes in the line of duty, and while anyone who’s taken a high school health class knows that childbirth is a messy endeavor, Donahoe was in awe of what happened.

“In our business we see so much tragedy," he said. "It’s really nice to have calls where we see joy and happiness.”
