Homeowners ask for development roads to be plowed

Jan 8, 2020

Homeowners on Jordan Road and Jonathan Lane asked the Board of Selectmen to reconsider the town’s snow-plowing policy on Tuesday night.

Because the streets are in a development with a Homeowner’s Association, they aren’t plowed by the town, and the residents argued that they were unable to plow the streets without the town’s help.

Stephen Corbitt of Jonathan Lane argued that there are many similar developments in town that are now plowed, although the roads within were never officially approved by town meeting. He also argued that the policy dictating which roads will be plowed, which has been changed several times over the years, is applied inconsistently.

Corbitt said that the residents in the development, built by Zoning Board of Appeals Chair Nazih Elkallassi, collectively paid more than $72,000 in taxes to the town last year, and the roads should take only a few minutes to plow.

Pam Hamlet, another resident of Jonathan Way, is a nurse who said she is considered “essential personnel” by the state, meaning that she is required to work no matter the weather conditions.

She also expressed concern that were an emergency to happen in the development following a storm, first responders might be unable to reach the scene.

The Selectmen agreed to discuss the situation further at a future meeting.
