Hundreds in Wareham without power during nor'easter

Mar 2, 2018

There were 722 Eversource customers in Wareham without power as of 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon due to the nor'easter hitting the coast, according to Eversource's outage map.

The storm slammed the East Coast with heavy rain, strong winds and flooding. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch, which will be in effect from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.

A high wind warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday. Gusts could reach 70 miles per hour and are expected to be strongest Friday afternoon and evening.

Wareham first responders are working to clear fallen trees from the roadway and prevent hazards from downed wires.

Coastal flooding is predicted for much of Massachusetts, but in Wareham it's not expected to be particularly damaging. The National Weather Service advises that devastating impacts are likely for communities exposed to the open ocean.

Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh discouraged traveling during the storm and advised securing loose items outside and preparing to possibly lose power.

The Wareham Department of Natural Resources posted a reminder on Facebook to check boats on stands periodically throughout the duration of the storm, since high winds could cause stands to loosen from the wind rocking the boat.
