Incoming kindergarteners enjoy a taste of Decas

The John W. Decas Elementary school cafeteria teemed with tiny humans Thursday night at the kindergarten ice cream social.
The school held the social in order to introduce the incoming children to one another, and to give them a taste of school life, Decas principal Donna Noonan said.
“I think the more opportunities that children have to get comfortable with their school, the more at ease they will feel,” Noonan said.
Noonan estimated about 100 children attended the event, which she said was a good turnout, given that about 150 students are registered for the 2015-2016 school year. However, she was still a bit concerned about kindergarten signups, which need to be completed soon, so the school knows how many classes to schedule for the fall.
“By whatever means we have to, we’ll keep scouting the neighborhoods, to find out where [the children] are,” Noonan said. “Certainly, there will be some kids that don’t move to this area until later … but we just want to get ahold of everyone we can now.”
Noonan said there are currently only enough students to justify eight classes, but she has enough teachers for 11. There are no immediate plans to cut teachers.
