Incorporation Parade to dance, gallop, and march through town
Few summer events in Wareham promise to be as large and as varied as this coming Saturday's Incorporation Parade, which will include floats ranging from a dance team to a class reunion to Budweiser's Clydesdales pulling a five-story cake.
"I know they've had a wonderful response, and it's going to be a very long parade," said Summer of Celebration Committee member and coordinator Claire Smith.
Smith said that the magnitude of this parade was easy to anticipate given the size of the last anniversary parade.
"I was around for the 250th and that was a very long parade," she said. "You know, people want to celebrate the town and they're willing to participate and they want to come out for it and be part of it."
Saturday's event will be led by the Colonial Navy Band from Fall River, followed by descendants of Wareham legend Israel Fearing.
Next, the famous Clydesdales will pull a carriage displaying the five-foot tall, five-layer birthday cake that Wareham's Jimmy Bruce has created for the town. This cake will also be on display at the birthday party and on the front lawn of Town Hall on Thursday from 2 p.m. to sunset.
Other parade attractions will include the Wareham Militia, a dance team to perform on the parade route, multiple bands, several floats from local businesses, and a Class of 1957 reunion float. Most members of the Class of 1957 were born in 1939, the town's 200th anniversary. A judge will also present various awards to the best-dressed floats.
"There's going to be a large variety of entertainment and celebration for the event," said parade coordinator Sharon Boyer, who also organizes the Veteran's Day parade. "We have such fabulous volunteers that are like, 'oh, we'll help, we'll do this,' so the outcome, I'm assuming, is going to be super, because we have so many people that want to help and participate."
The parade will begin on Main Street in front of Tobey Hospital, travel down to the Town Green and around it, move onto Gibbs Street, then continue to Route 6 and finally turn on to Viking Drive.
While the Incorporation Parade is the biggest event of the weekend, there are number of other attractions for people to enjoy. Public Safety Day on Sunday will feature a wide variety of demonstrations by volunteers from the Police, Fire, and Harbormaster departments, as well as EMS, the Environmental Police, the Coast Guard, and the State Police. This event will be followed by a Vintage Baseball game, where the only rule is that there are no rules.
"I think it's just going to be an exciting weekend for everything," said Smith. "It's a great family weekend where people can come and bring the kids and just have a great time."
