James “Jim” Brogioli, 95
WAREHAM – James “Jim” Brogioli, 95, of Wareham died on Monday, September 7, 2026 at his home.
Jim was born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1931 to Angelo and Anastacia (Hastings) Brogioli. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1948 and attended the College of the Holy Cross where he was a member of the class of 1953 and a varsity track athlete. He left Holy Cross to enter St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts where he studied for the priesthood. Although he ultimately discerned that the priesthood was not his calling, his deep Catholic faith remained central to his life. He subsequently joined the United States Marine Corps, serving as a First Lieutenant. His time in the seminary and the Marines helped form his faith, discipline, and commitment to service.
Jim married Louise D. (Ploe) Brogioli in 1960 and they made their first home in La Jolla, California where Jim began his long career as an educator. He continued teaching in Massachusetts while earning a Master of Education degree from Bridgewater State University and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from Boston University. For 29 years he taught English and Latin at Wareham High School and served as the English Department Chair. He was an “old school” teacher who earned the respect and admiration of his students. He coached cross-country and was the varsity boys’ basketball coach for 25 seasons. He was a competitive, passionate, and demanding coach, but also a role model for many of his student athletes. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Wareham High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013; the Wareham High School basketball court is named in his honor.
Jim was an active and faithful member of St. Patrick’s Parish where he taught CCD and served as a parish council member and lector. He was also a member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society where he worked with families in need. Jim visited those in prison, helped the homeless, and faithfully visited his friends and former coworkers who were in nursing homes or rehab facilities.
He served as the leader of the local Big Brothers/Big Sisters program for several years where he positively influenced the lives of many children, and he also worked in the summers as a Deputy Harbor Master and Shellfish Constable for the Town of Wareham for 25 years. Jim was passionate about the Holy Cross Crusaders, Viking basketball, running, and skiing. He also enjoyed boating and fishing.
Jim is predeceased by his wife Louise and his brother Ted. Survivors include his five sons: Kevin Brogioli and his wife Wendy of Wareham; Michael Brogioli of Mount Rainier, Maryland; Mark Brogioli and his wife Stella of Mattapoisett; Jamie Brogioli and his husband Michael Fenton of Boston; David Brogioli and his wife Tricia of Wareham; two daughters: Laurie Kassabian and her husband Jay of Mattapoisett and Ann Brogioli of Washington, DC. Jim’s family was the center of his life, and he especially enjoyed his 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Jim demonstrated a life of faith, service, and commitment to his community and family, and he exemplified the Marine Corps motto “Semper Fidelis.”
Relatives and friends are invited to visit o Sunday, September 13, 2026 at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – Wareham, 2599 Cranberry Hwy. (Rt. 28), Wareham from 4 to 7 PM. His funeral Mass will be held celebrated on Monday, September 14, 2026 at St. Patrick’s Church, 94 High Street, Wareham at 11:30 AM. Please go directly to church. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham.
