Jr. Vikings victorious in a 6-5 nail-biter against Westwood
The Jr. Vikings youth hockey team is back on the winning track after defeating Westwood on Sunday, February 12, following a nail-biter in Raynham which ended with a score of 6-5.
The back and forth action started with Westwood getting on the scoreboard first with a first-period goal.
In the second period, Alex Atkinson put the Jr. Vikings in the game with a goal and an assist from Nick Elicier and Brady Smith. Westwood responded with another goal, but Sean Fagan of the Jr. Vikings tied it up with an assist from Stephen Toal.
Matt St.John of Wareham gave the Jr. Vikings their first lead by taking one down and into the net with an assist from goalie Chase Cunningham. Wareham lost its lead however as Westwood tied it up to end the second period.
The Jr. Vikings were on top again in the third period after a goal from Stephen Toal, assisted by Brian Holmes. Another goal by Stephen Toal with an assist from Sean Fagan and Matt St.John gave the Jr. Vikings a 2-point lead.
The excitement didn't stop stop. With a minute-and-a-half left in the game, Westwood brought the score within one point At 16 seconds left, Westwood pulled their goalie, but Viking Tyler Gallus took charge and scored on an open net assisted by Stephen Toal.
A persistent Westwood had a strong drive down in the last nine seconds that resulted in a goal putting them within one point again, but in the end the game belonged to the Vikings.
Despite a lot of pressure in front of the Wareham net, time ran out for Westwood and the Jr. Vikings were victorious.
