Judy Caporiccio to run for open School Committee seat

Feb 17, 2015

Judy Caporiccio has announced that she will run for the Wareham School Committee in the April elections.

Caporiccio has 36 years of experience as an educator, including work as a reading teacher, a special education teacher, and a department head, in Somerset and Westwood.

She moved to the Swifts Beach neighborhood last year after many years as a summer resident here.

“What I bring to (the town) is an understanding of the structure of schools, school law, and understanding of constraints involved in running schools, both legally and fiscally,” said Ms. Caporiccio in a letter announcing her candidacy. “I have worked collaboratively on strategic plans, have been part of administrative hiring committees, and I’ve been through 36 years of budget cycles.”

Ms. Caporiccio was elected president of the Swifts Beach Improvement Association last summer, and was appointed to the Beach and Tourism Committee, an advisory committee to the Board of Selectmen, last October. This will be her first attempt at elective office.

“I believe education is the business of educating children,” she said. “We have to keep the interests of students first and foremost while working within our budget and adhering to the law.”

Ms. Caporiccio lives with family on Roby Street.

Earlier this year, committee member Michael Flaherty announced his decision not to seek re-election to the committee. Committee member Geoff Swett, the other member up for re-election, said at the time that he would run again barring any changes.
