Jug Shop’s liquor license suspension withdrawn after owners plan tosell business

Nov 20, 2018

A 30-day liquor license suspension for the Jug Shop has been withdrawn pending the approved sale of the store to the DJP Liquor Corporation in December.

Selectmen approved the transfer of the store’s liquor license on Nov. 20 from current owner Adelaide DePonte to Dipenkumar Patel. Selectman Alan Slavin was the only dissenting vote.

The liquor license was originally set to be suspended from Dec. 2 to Jan. 2. Deponte sold a six-pack of Budweiser to the same 19-year-old, undercover agent on July 26 and again on July 31 a the Main Street store.

Wareham Police conducted identification compliance checks of all the town’s liquor stores this summer. In total, four locations failed the initial check, but the Jug Shop was the only business to fail twice.

The 30-day suspension was originally handed down by Selectmen during their Sept. 11 meeting with Deponte admitting to the sale and apologizing.

Deponte later filed an appeal in October with the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, causing Selectmen to postpone the suspension.

“My concern with approving this transfer now is that the person with two violations is going to skate away with nothing,” Slavin said.

Deponte’s attorney Gregory Longo said that the appeal to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission would be dropped pending the store’s sale to Patel, meaning that the 30-day suspension could be reapplied if the transfer of ownership failed to go through.

The Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission will have the final say in approving the sale, which Selectman Peter Teitelbaum said could take up to 30 days.

As of last week, Deponte had not applied to renew the liquor license for 2019.
