Kasey Melloni crossed the finish line for her dear friend Cindy Worrell
Wareham resident Kasey Melloni ran and finished the Boston Marathon in memory and honor of her late friend and neighbor, Cindy Worrell.
"She was such an amazing person," Melloni said. "If I could be half the person she was in my life... I got a lot of inspiration from her."
In January, Worrell lost a prolonged battled with cancer. Melloni ran with Worrell's most beloved charity- the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
"I run the marathon not only to celebrate and honor the life of Cindy Worrell, to raise capital in support of one of her most favorite programs," wrote Melloni in her fundraising campaign flyer.
In last week's issue, Wareham Week incorrectly reported Melloni's progress in the Boston Marathon as incomplete. Melloni crossed the finish line at 6:04 p.m.
Melloni has competed in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. and the Disney Marathon in Orlando, Florida in support of Worrell's fight with cancer and the plight of returning veterans.
Melloni has said that all her races this year will be for Worrell. Boston Marathon was her sixth marathon, but she holds 24 medals in half marathons and other races. Melloni signed up to be a runner for the MGH team in hopes of surprising Worrell. Unbeknownst to Melloni, Worrell had written a letter to the leader of the team asking if Melloni could join.
"This year, Kasey was honored to be chosen as part of the MGH team because of her compassion and drive to compete and finish for a friend in the fight of her life," wrote Richard Melloni, Kasey's husband. "Unfortunately, Cindy was not able to be here to witness this - although I am sure she was with Kasey every step of the way in spirit."
Melloni raised $6,000 during the Boston Marathon.
