Kayakers take a run at becoming this year's poker run champ
The 25 kayakers who showed up to the annual Onset Bay Association Kayak Poker Run Saturday morning were pleased to find neither rain nor intense heat would spoil their watery fun.
Onset Bay Association President Eleanor Martin said she believed the poker run has been running for 15 years. She also said the run, which began and ended on Shell Point, was a way for the association to get people into the area.
“This is one of the most beautiful kayak areas there are,” Martin said. “I was talking to [Dick] Wheeler, and … he said Wareham has the best kayaking in the country. If he says it, I believe it!”
Bourne Public Library Director Patrick Marshall, who helped orchestrate the event and was in charge of water safety, laid out the rules for the contestants. There were four different checkpoints, at which kayakers grabbed a card. After they reached Shell Point again, they got their last card. The different hands were then ranked in order of best poker hand to worst.
Marshall said the contestants were not allowed to trade cards, and that, if they did, he would use his “Big Bertha-type [water] gun” on them.
“As people here who have been here before know, I am not afraid to use it,” Marshall said, eliciting laughs from the competitors.
Martin said most of money from the event went to giving winners prizes, but that a little could be saved for future association events, such as the sandcastle day the organization will hold on July 18. She admitted she was surprised by the small turnout.
“We’ve had as many as 50 [people],” Martin said. “The numbers have gone down a little bit. We’re not sure why.”
The winner of the event was Sharon Elder, who won a cash prize of $150.
