Kids 'head' back to school with fresh cuts

Sep 3, 2017

Elementary school kids filed in to Faded Image Barbershop on Sunday to get their back to school haircut– free of charge.

Tom Silvia, owner of Faded Image Barbershop at 170 Main Street, offered free haircuts to members of the Boys & Girls Club in first through eighth grade. Silvia said he wanted to help boys whose families might not have been able to afford to get them haircuts for the fall.

Silvia said kids have been some of his most regular customers at Faded Image since he opened in October 2015.

“The kids in the community supported me when I first opened, so I figured it’s only right for me to give back to them,” Silvia said.

On Sunday, he and Abdull-Malik Bartelle, who has worked at Faded Image for three months, had a steady stream of boys to attend to.

One of them, Jude Voss, age 11, said Faded Image is his favorite place to get a haircut.

“I always beg my mom to take me here,” Voss said as Silvia styled his hair.

Silvia said any money made in tips from Sunday’s haircuts will be used to buy water bottles to send to Hurricane Harvey survivors in Houston.
